Dublin or Belfast? Or both?

Instead of visiting pre-Christmassy Dublin in November like in previous years, classes 4AHITM and 4AHITN enjoyed sunshiny spring days in Europe’s IT capital this time, accompanied by their English teachers Mike Pölzl and Irene Holawe.

Traditionally, everyone was staying at Irish hosts’ to improve their language skills and gain impressions of family life in an English speaking country. Moreover,  the students had to put their English to the test in manifold everyday life situations, basically to discover that ‘if you have the words, there’s always a chance that you’ll find the way’ (Seamus Heaney).

After the regular morning classes with experienced native English teachers at Babel academy of English, our days were filled with numerous extracurricular activities, such as a guided walking tour through Dublin’s historical centre and visits of some of the city’s most well-known landmarks and museums. A tour of Croke Park Stadium as well as an evening at the Greyhound Races familiarized us with some traditional pastimes of the Dubs.

One special highlight of this year’s stay was a day trip to Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. There we caught a glimpse of some famous murals and were then invited to leave a short note on one of the peace walls remaining from the long, gory conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Afterwards the students had the option of either visiting the impressive Titanic Museum, built exactly at the spot where the ‘unsinkable’ ship had been constructed, or of taking a stroll through the picturesque inner city of Belfast.

Naturally, it is impossible to discover the whole beauty of the Emerald Isle in a mini stay of only five days. However, as Ireland is home to Google, PayPal, and Facebook, our IT experts stand a good chance to see more of it in the future.
